The Shouting Mute, AKA Dave Young, is a performance poet, musician and writer; a communication aid user pushing the boundaries of eye gaze and communication tech. He has written and performed on stage for theatre since 2012 and previous collaborations include Diverse City, Graeae, Ramps on the Moon and with his own inclusive theatre and media company ‘The Shouting Mute’; which is the first AAC led company of its kind.

Autumn 2024 birthed a new show called ‘Meltdown’ whereby Dave experimented with a fusion of music, sound design and performance poetry. The production saw the emergence of gig theatre from modalities such as live music, soundbeam, switches and various apps and software’s across Dave’s devices, which resulted in original poetic material overlapped with electronic beats and bass.

Dave considers himself an activist in the promotion of inclusive practices. He believes that through the arts everyone can have a voice to recount their stories and experiences in the world. Dave hopes that others see him as a role model whereby his positive actions and character help to create a more inclusive culture in the future.
